Kayle’s Crystal Saber
The ill-fated general Kayle had a single prized possession. It’s a high-grade, customized crystal officer’s sword given to him personally by the Aelphi’s Lord Obeiron.
The history of the emission-crystal technology is a special one. It was stolen.
Eons before the Aelphi were able to master flight, a species across their galaxy discovered emission crystals in a methane mine. The discovery was accidental, it was surprising and it was so destructive it nearly obliterated their world.
The crystals are formed from a rare combination of minerals by an even more isolated level of volcanic pressure and heat. The structures have to be just so aligned. It’s a 1/(342*10^16) chance. But what that infinitesimal opportunity brings is incredible.
The emission crystals intake energies and translate them. Some crystals can store the energy, releasing it later in larger doses and some can act as capacitors, others can work as magnifying transmitters.
The color, composition and shape dictate the energy it intakes, outputs and the shape of the emissions.
These creatures, the Holtignat, cultivated the crystals for a plethora of uses. It advanced their culture exponentially. Eventually, they developed very advanced spacecraft with which they explored the close lying planets.
With advancement brought technologic revolutions and the species went further and further away from their home world. They built a large ship to hold whole cities which could stay in travel for millennia. They began gathering specimens from other planets. They would experiment on them, genetically modifying each new specimen into, what they thought, were better versions than the originals.
Their original pledge was to never abduct a creature above a certain intelligence level. As they grew more knowledgable, though, their baseline of intelligence raised with them. They captured their first and last mistake, a creature who had been imprisoned by its own people, a creature who had a name that meant ‘murderer’.
They experimented on it, like the others, and found that they could tamper with it to a far greater extent than any other creature. They theorized that it’s people may have been constructs; creations from another species using custom-built genomes.
They made it long-lived and incredibly resilient. They made it ever youthful to remain it’s nearly adult senescence level in which they had found it. They made it this way so they could always go back to it.
With time, the creature lost the memory of its own people and only knew the horrors of constant prodding and probing. Its rage grew.
The Holtignat’s researched showed that it had actually not reached a certain level of maturity. They wanted to see the changes the new body would undergo. They wanted to see what they had done and if that poor creature could assimilate the new aspects of its form.
They triggered the change through hormonal induction. They were not aware of the sizable increase in strength and stamina this would bring about. The surge of new power gave it the chance.
The creature destroyed the inside of the ship and crashed it into the Aelphi world.
The Aelphi weren’t an advanced people. They were war-like and petty. When the ship crashed in the middle of the Plain’s People’s territory, they mistook it for an attack from a warring tribe. They stormed the vessel, ready to slaughter. They found the last remnants of the Holtignat running from a creature they saw as incredible, awe-inspiring, and frightening. They saw it using emission crystal propulsion systems as weapons and, this being their first introduction to the technology, associated it with battle.
The Aelphi aided the creature in dispatching the last as of the ‘disgusting horrors’, as the Aelphi reports have described the Holtignat.
From this crashed ship came the entire basis for Aelphi technology. From the emission crystals came the formation of the modern Aelphi weaponry. From the monstrous creature, whose escape brought all these things to them, was born their future…
